Visiting the Canadian Battlefields of Italy is a fabulous itinerary.  Begin in Cassino and follow the battles of 1944 through the Gothic Line, Rimini and Coriano to Revenna.  Coastal accomodations in Pessaro on the Adriatic provide a central location, with excellent fresh seafood and local specialties.
