Join Fields of Fire Tours and Merit Travel Canada for an unforgettable journey through the historic battlefields of Belgium and France, commemorating the legacy of Canadian soldiers who served in the First and Second World Wars. This expertly guided tour, led by experienced military historians and veterans, offers a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the North Saskatchewan Regiment and honour Canada’s military heritage.
The tour begins on June 25, with departure from Canada to Paris. Upon arrival, participants will travel to Ypres, Belgium, where they’ll explore the renowned In Flanders Fields Museum and settle into the Novotel Hotel Ypres for three nights. Over the next two days, guests will visit key sites from the 2nd Battle of Ypres (1915) and the 1916 battles of Hill 62, culminating in participation in the poignant Menin Gate ceremony. The itinerary also includes visits to lesser-known but significant battlefields such as Festubert and Ploegsteert, important to the 5th Battalion CEF.
On June 29, the group travels to Arras, France, with a full day dedicated to exploring Vimy Ridge, a site of immense importance to both the 5th Bn CEF and 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles. The day concludes with a visit to Nine Elms War Cemetery before checking into the Mercure Arras Centre Gare for a four-night stay.
The following days delve into the Battle of Hill 70, the Somme, and the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment faced devastating losses. Participants will also explore the Hundred Days Offensive, including the battlefields of Amiens, Warvilliers, and Cambrai, reflecting on the final push that led to the end of the First World War.
On July 3, the tour shifts focus to the Second World War with a visit to Dieppe, site of the ill-fated 1942 raid, and the Dieppe War Cemetery. The group will stay overnight at the Mercure Dieppe Presidence Hotel. The next day, the tour continues to Normandy, featuring stops at the Juno Beach Centre, D+1 battlefields, and the Abbaye d’Ardenne, with accommodations at the Mercure Caen Port de Plaisance.
The tour concludes on July 5, with departures from Paris. Optional extended stays in Europe are easily arranged.
